EAL Level 3 Award in the Requirements for the Installation of Electric Vehicle Charging Points
Sector: Electrotechnical
Type: Award
Qualification Code: 603/3929/9
Overview:The purpose of this award is to provide learners with a comprehensive understanding of the application of the IET Code of Practice for Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment Installation. It is designed to equip individuals working in the electrotechnical sector with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively install electric vehicle (EV) charging equipment.
The award allows individuals to develop their understanding of the installation process for EV charging equipment, including the relevant regulations, standards, and best practices outlined in the IET Code of Practice. By completing this award, learners will gain the expertise to safely and correctly install EV charging equipment, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations.
This qualification plays a vital role in supporting the growth of electric vehicles and the infrastructure needed to support
Qualification pre-requisites:To excel in the installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging equipment, learners must have a strong understanding of the relevant wiring regulations, as well as possess knowledge in initial verification and commissioning processes. This can be demonstrated by holding relevant qualifications in BS 7671 (Requirements for Electrical Installations) and inspection and testing.
BS 7671 is the British Standard for electrical installations. It sets out the requirements and guidelines for the design, installation, and maintenance of electrical systems, including those related to EV charging equipment. By holding a qualification in BS 7671, learners acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to ensure that their installations comply with the appropriate regulations and industry standards.
In addition, qualifications in inspection and testing provide learners with the ability to assess and verify the safety and functionality of electrical installations, including EV charging equipment. This involves conducting tests to assess the continuity, insulation resistance, polarity, earth fault-loop impedance, prospective fault current, and functional performance of the installation.
By being conversant with the relevant wiring regulations and possessing qualifications in BS 7671 and inspection and testing, learners are equipped with the necessary technical expertise and understanding to carry out the installation, verification, and commissioning of EV charging equipment in compliance with industry best practices and regulations.
Effective from September 1, 2023, there is an important entry requirement update for registrations. To enroll in this qualification, learners must be competent electricians and hold one of the following qualifications, along with the relevant AM test (e.g., AM2/S/E/D):
- Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment (Buildings, Structures, and the Environment)
- Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Electrotechnical Services (Electrical Maintenance)
- Level 3 Electrotechnical Qualification
